Kirsten’s dance education began with gymnastics at the age of 2, and choreographed her first floor routine to the Star Wars theme song herself at age 5.

Kirsten graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine in 1997 where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Choreography and in Dance Performance. While attending UCI, she was a member of Donald McKayle’s modern company Etude Ensemble, Fresno Ballet, and has returned to UCI as a guest choreographer for Bare Bones Dance Theatre in 2007, and as a guest performer for th Donald McKayle’s Tribute in 2009.

After college, Kirsten moved to Seattle and has now been with Gotta Dance more than 20 years. Along the way, she has also taught for many local studios, but found her loyalty and home at Gotta Dance. Kirsten continues to be involved in projects outside of Gotta Dance, teaching for STG’s DANCE This Intensives and Camp, Cornish Prep Program, and Dance Masters of America.  Kirsten performed as well as choreographed for the band Queensryche’s cabaret-style rock concert, En L’air, and Sign of the Times. Kirsten co-produces Shorecrest Hip Hop’s Physical Poetry with her husband, Rex Kinney, as well as other projects as co-finale choreographers for STG’s DANCE This and Global Party. For the 19thAnniversary of STG’s DANCE This Kirsten was the finale choreographer and rehearsal director for a commission of Donald McKayle piece “Shaker Life” from Songs of the Disinherited.

Kirsten is passionate about teaching dancers to understand dance technique, improvisation, choreography, and dance as a common denominator for bringing people together. In 2001, Kirsten supplemented her dance education with a Pilates certificationfrom the Pilates Studio of Seattle (now Seattle Pilates International) in 2001. Kirsten loves to remain a student always, and loves sharing her experience and knowledge with her many dance students.
